Hello everyone!
I am back!
Today, I would like to talk about the stereotype of different cultures, especially that in India, as shown in the film "Bend it like Beckham".
In the film, there was a scene when Mrs. Bhamra, Jess's mom, caught Jess playing soccer with guys who were topless. This situation is completely abnormal in Indian's culture, which is more conservative. As part of the Indian culture, the women are expected to behave as a housewife, and cooking for the family. In contrast to Mrs. Bhamra, who strongly sticks to her first culture, which is Indian, Jess is eager to become a football player, and she doesn't want to stay at home to help with the housework such as cooking.
As a result, we can see that Mrs. Bhamra is trying to shape her daughter as a typical Indian woman, who is more docile. On the other hand, Jess broke this stereotype of Indian woman, and tried to pursue her own dreams: to become a soccer player.
Dear all, I would like you to think about the stereotype of your own culture, and please feel free to comment below about your opinions on Jess's action. What would you do if you were her?
Enjoy!
