Hi readers!
Today, I would like to introduce an insightful movie called "Bend it like Beckham" to all of you. It is about an Indian family who migrated to England, where they encounter a diversity of cultures and people. Specifically, in this post, I would like to share some of my ideas about culture shock with you, as shown in one of the scenes in the movie.
Jess, who is a Sikh woman, was born in England. Even though she spoke fluent English, she was influenced by her first culture, which is Indian, to a large extent. For instance, in the film, when Jess was with other girls in the rest room, where everyone changed her clothes, Jess wasn't comfortable with changing and taking her clothes off in front of the others, even if they are girls. This situation can be seen as culture shock, which defines as "the personal disorientation a person may feel when experiencing an unfamiliar way of life due to immigration or a visit to a new country, a move between social environments, or simply travel to another type of life."
As a result, the difference between Western culture and Indian culture is obvious. The western culture, as portrayed by the girls who were changing their clothes in front of others, is more open compare to that of Indian, which is more conservative. In conclusion, different cultures value various kind of things. Thus, they all have distinct perspectives and approaches to things. Consequently, when one associates with divergent cultures from one's own culture, it is likely that one is going to experience culture shock.
Hope this information is useful for you!
